Rodney Carrington
May 18, 2008
Not yet 40, comedian RodneyCarrington is a one-man entertainment corporation. He will bring his talents to the Little River Casino Resort this Friday, May 23, for one performance.
Known to his fans for his semi-successful sitcom Rodney (it lasted two seasons) on ABC, and his regular appearances on the Bob and Tom Show, Carrington has quickly risen to A-list of comedians on the circuit.
It might be better stated that Carringtons star power has put him among the top entertainers in the right now. His shows are selling out and his agent has him so booked between live performances, writing a book, recording a new album and making a major motion picture that there is speculation that Carrington must use lookalikes to accomplish everything.
His comedic songs are what first garnered him a following; such tunes as Titties and Beer and When My Wife Met My Girlfriend. A couple of years ago he had a hit video with his song Dancing With A Man, that featured comedian Carrot Top dressed in drag.
His material has always been about adult themes and his most famous song of all is Letters To My Penis. He is currently out touring in
support of his 2007 album King Of The Mountains.
No, No, No. You got it all wrong. In the comedy business we do it backwards from the music business, said Carrington. We release an album after we have tested the material to make sure people will buy it.
BEER FOR MY HORSES
Carrington has had little problem selling millions of albums. His last four albums have all climbed into the Top 20 of the Billboard Country Charts. He is excited to get back on the road after spending the early part of the year making a major motion picture with his buddy Toby Keith.
Carrington and Keith wrote the screenplay for the movie Beer For My Horses. The film co-stars Keith and Carrington and a cast of characters including Ted Nugent and Willie Nelson, among others.
Based on the hit song, Beer For My Horses by Toby Keith, the film follows the exploits of small town deputies who defy the local sheriff to embark on an outrageous road trip to save one of their girlfriends from drug lord kidnappers.
A lot of the film is around songs that I wrote, said Toby Keith. It was a lot of fun though to work with Rodney on the screenplay. He is very funny.
So what did Carrington think about the Motor City Madmans acting debut?
Nugents character goes by the name Skunk. Ted is talented, hard working, and was a lot of fun to be around, said Carrington. I see this acting as something he could do more of.
The film is in post-production and is slated for release later this year. But Carrington has no time to catch his breath. In addition to a hectic tour schedule, he is back in the studio for a new album of all music to be released this fall.
ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE
So after making a film, would Carrington consider going back to another sitcom?
Anything is possible, said Carrington whose sitcom ended in 2006. I consider that sitcom as a two-year infomercial for everything else in my career.
As for his material, like most comedians he draws on his own life.
My subject matter comes from personal experience, said Carrington. Ive found that when your comedy is based on honesty, people respond. Each album has been a time capsule of what has gone in my life over that period of time. Its a mixture of family material and my personal journey. After being on the road for years, having three kids and a marriage of nearly 15 years, I have plenty of material.
Carrington also attributes his success from not leaving Tulsa for Nashville or Los Angeles.
It keeps me grounded, living in Tulsa. Plus, when you live in the middle of the country, both coasts are closer, said Carrington. Being a regular guy keeps me connected to my audiences. They can relate to me. I have people all the time say, you talk about the stuff we are living everyday. My audience identifies with the struggles in my life.
With all his success there is another thing Carrington never plans on changing.
I have no agenda. I dont want to change anyones mind on anything, said Carrington. I dont want to sell anything to anyone but laughter. I am in the business of making people laugh. I have an obligation to my fans and I want to entertain them, to be funny.
Tickets are selling quickly for Rodney Carrington (all of his shows for the past three years have been sell outs). For additional show and ticket information call the Little River Casino box office at 1-888-568-2244 or visit littlerivercasinos.com.
