Northern Michigan Fundraisers to benefit Katrina Victims

Sept. 14, 2005
The devastation and destruction of Hurricane Katrina might have happened 1,300 miles from us, but by the outpouring of support from northern Michigan communities, it might as well have happened in our own backyard.

“I think everyone was impacted by this regardless of where you live,” said Doug Street of Streeters’ Ground Zero Nightclub. “We are a very giving community. When one of us suffers, we all suffer regardless of what part of the country you live in. I think at the end of the day we all want to find our own way to help.”

For Doug Street that means organizing a concert at his nightclub and raising funds. On Friday, September 16, his Ground Zero Nightclub will host eight bands to raise funds for the American Red Cross relief efforts.

“We are giving all the money to the local Red Cross for their work in the relief efforts. They will have representatives at the benefit to answer questions and to tell participants how they may help in additional ways,” said Street. “The support for this has been unbelievable with several bands volunteering for area businesses, donating money and items.”

The Rock ‘N Relief event will be hosted by Kenny Olson and gets underway at 6 pm. Streeters will provide appetizers for the first two hours and bands like JoCaine from Detroit along with Blisstripp, Brian Schram and Rumor, will rock the house. A $15 donation will be collected at the door. For additional info-rmation visit www.streetersonline.com or call (231) 932-1300.

Nearby the BigEazy a two-day benefit will take place September 14 & 15 with 25% of all drink/food tabs being donated to the Salvation Army. Each night from 5 – 8 pm a variety of bands will perform in the parking lot and then the music will move inside. A $5cover will be collected and given to the relief efforts.

On Saturday, September 24, Another Cuppa Joe at the old State Hospital Grounds will host a New Orleans style “Soup Kitchen” from 11 am to 5 pm. Expect special musical guests and lots of great soup with proceeds going to the American Red Cross.

310 Restaurant on Cass Street in Traverse City on September 24 will offer a variety of ways to contribute to the American Red Cross from 8 pm to close. 100% of the cover will go to the Red Cross ($5 donation or more) and representatives will be on hand to answer questions. Fifty percent of the evening’s food sales and gratuities will also be donated. The regular menu will be served with some Cajun, Creole and Bayou dishes being offered as well. Area artists have donated original works of art for a silent auction. For additional details call (231) 932-1310.
