3 Options for Your Weekend

A sweet little Saturday is in store May 22
By Lynda Wheatley | May 15, 2021

Looking for a fun weekend outing? Here's three we recommend:

Craft Show in Traverse City:
Don your face masks and don’t be late, the socially distanced Outdoor Craft & Vendor Show, featuring the wares of more than 40 local artisans and vendors, will run 10am–3pm Saturday, May 22, on the front lawn at The Village at Grand Traverse Commons. Grab a cup of coffee at Cuppa Joe, lunch at Red Spire Brunch house, and support local crafters and your community’s economy while safely roaming the grounds of the prettiest former asylum Up North. See www.facebook.com/thevillagetc for details and updates.

Strings Concert in Bay Harbor:
For the first time in two years, the entire Dorothy Gerber Strings Program will perform together, live, at the Great Lakes Center for the Arts. The end-of-year Collage Concert brings together student musicians from all levels of the educational programs — young violinist, celloists, and viola and bass players — to perform as ensembles and as part of the DGSP youth symphony. Seating for the 6pm May 22 event is limited, but tickets are still available — or you can watch it stream live at youtu.be/GEX03Zi9YKc.

Zoo-de-Mack, Harbor Springs to Mackinaw City
Next to the blooming of the cherry blossoms, the Zoo-de-Mack might just be the biggest rite of spring in northern Michigan. This year, the event —  a long but leisurely bike ride from the Zoo Bar at Boyne Highlands, in Harbor Springs, to Mackinaw City — is celebrating its 31st year on the road (The 2020 event was canceled.) Hundreds of bicyclists, families included, are expected to ride in the event, which starts with the 51-mile ride north Saturday, May 22. Cyclists travel 51 miles along Lake Michigan roads, through the famed Tunnel of Trees, to Cross Village for a grab-and-go lunch from Legs Inn and onto Mackinaw City. Although no large organized parties are planned (as of May 1; an outdoor gathering is under consideration), options for solo or small-group travel are many: Once in Mackinaw City, riders can ferry to Mackinac Island for dinner, to stay the night, or dine at the Crossings.
